When are 2021 taxes due? Federal and state deadlines.

On March 17, 2021 the U.S. Treasury Department and the IRS announced the 2020 federal tax filing due date for individuals has been extended to May 17, 2021.

Individuals will have an extra month from the original date of April 15, 2021 to file their taxes. Taxpayers need to be aware that is only for federal tax payments, their state may have different deadlines.

Check out the list of deadlines by state below*.

  • Alabama: The state will automatically waive, without request, late-payment penalties for payments remitted by May 17, 2021. However, interest will still accrue from April 15, 2021 through the actual payment date.
  • Alaska: Alaska does not have an income tax.
  • Arizona: The deadline is extended to May 17. The extended deadline also includes Form 140PTC and Form 140ET.
  • Arkansas: The deadline is extended to May 17.
  • California: The deadline is extended to May 17. The extension does not apply to estimated payments for the 2021 income tax year due on April 15, 2021.
  • Colorado: The deadline is extended to May 17. The extension does not apply to estimated payments for the 2021 income tax year due on April 15, 2021.
  • Connecticut: The deadline is extended to May 17. The extension does not apply to estimated payments for the 2021 income tax year due on April 15, 2021.
  • Delaware: The deadline is extended to May 17. The extension does not apply to estimated payments for the 2021 income tax year due on April 30, 2021.
  • Florida: Florida does not have a state income tax.
  • Georgia: The deadline is extended to May 17. The extension does not apply to estimated payments for the 2021 income tax year due on April 15, 2021.
  • Hawaii: The deadline is still April 20, but you can also file for a six month extension if certain criteria is met.
  • Idaho: The deadline is extended to May 17.
  • Illinois: The deadline is extended to May 17. The extension does not apply to estimated payments for the 2021 income tax year due on April 15, 2021.
  • Indiana: The deadline is extended to May 17.
  • Iowa: The deadline is extended to June 1 and estimated payments will be due April 30.
  • Kansas: The deadline is extended to May 17.
  • Kentucky: The deadline is extended to May 17. The extension does not apply to estimated payments for the 2021 income tax year due on April 15, 2021.
  • Louisiana: The deadline is extended to June 15 to help those impacted by the winter storms. This is for individual income, corporation income and franchise, fiduciary income, partnership and partnership composite tax returns and payments that originally were due on or after Feb. 11 and before June 14.
  • Maine: The deadline is extended to May 17. The extension does not apply to estimated payments for the 2021 income tax year due on April 15, 2021.
  • Maryland: The deadline for state taxes has been extended to July 15.
  • Massachusetts: The deadline is extended to May 17. The extension does not apply to estimated payments for the 2021 income tax year due on April 15, 2021.
  • Michigan: The deadline is extended to May 17. The extension does not apply to estimated payments for the 2021 income tax year due on April 15, 2021.
  • Minnesota: The deadline is extended to May 17. The extension does not apply to estimated payments for the 2021 income tax year due on April 15, 2021.
  • Mississippi: The deadline is extended to May 17.
  • Missouri: The deadline is extended to May 17. The extension does not apply to estimated payments for the 2021 income tax year due on April 15, 2021.
  • Montana: The deadline is extended to May 17. The extension does not apply to estimated payments for the 2021 income tax year.
  • Nebraska: The deadline is extended to May 17. The extension does not apply to estimated payments for the 2021 income tax year due on April 15, 2021.
  • Nevada: Nevada does not have a state income tax.
  • New Hampshire: The deadline is still April 15.
  • New Jersey: The deadline is extended to May 17. The extension does not apply to estimated payments for the 2021 income tax year due on April 15, 2021.
  • New Mexico: The deadline is extended to May 17.
  • New York: The deadline is extended to May 17.
  • North Carolina: The deadline is extended to May 17. The extension does not apply to estimated payments for the 2021 income tax year due on April 15, 2021.
  • North Dakota: The deadline is extended to May 17.
  • Ohio: The deadline is extended to May 17. The extension does not apply to estimated payments for the 2021 income tax year due on April 15, 2021.
  • Oklahoma: The deadline is extended to June 15 to help those impacted by the winter storms.
  • Oregon: The deadline is extended to May 17.
  • Pennsylvania: The deadline is extended to May 17.
  • Rhode Island: The deadline is extended to May 17.
  • South Carolina: The deadline is extended to May 17.
  • South Dakota: South Dakota does not have a state income tax.
  • Tennessee: The due date for filing and paying the Hall income tax from April 15, 2021 to May 17, 2021.
  • Texas: the extension of the due date for 2021 franchise tax reports from May 15, 2021 to June 15, 2021.
  • Utah: The deadline is extended to May 17.
  • Vermont: The deadline is extended to May 17.
  • Virginia: The deadline is extended to May 17. The first quarter estimated tax payment is still due May 3, 2021.
  • Washington: Washington does not have a state income tax.
  • West Virginia: The deadline is extended to May 17. The extension does not apply to estimated payments for the 2021 income tax year due on April 15, 2021.
  • Wisconsin: The deadline is extended to May 17.
  • Wyoming: Wyoming does not have a state income tax.
